You’re a thief on a suspended sentence. You belong to Section 2. We own you. You’re nothing more than an indentured servant with three stripes. You’re going to do whatever we want, whenever we want and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it,MoreYou’re a thief on a suspended sentence.

You belong to Section 2. We own you. You’re nothing more than an indentured servant with three stripes. You’re going to do whatever we want, whenever we want and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it, is there?”East Berlin, 1970. US Army Intelligence operative Sergeant Talbot is sent to kill Dr. Meinhard Starczak, who is developing a deadly nerve gas for the Warsaw Pact. From the beginning, Talbots mission starts to unravel.

He finds himself trapped in East Berlin, while playing a deadly game of cat and mouse with the Stasi.“A new nerve gas Talbot, called VS. Unlike the standard nerve gases out there on both sides, this one will eat right through the filters on all NATO gas masks and the clothing we use in our chemical over-garments.” Talbot whistled lightly. This was serious, damned serious. Nerve gas had always been deadly, but controllable, unlike chlorine gas, which no one was crazy enough to ever think about using.“Well, what about the Warsaw Pact?

Sounds like this stuff will be just as lethal to them.”“Starczak’s also developing a new filter for their masks and some kind of new suit that would prevent the VS gas from killing any Warsaw Pact troops employing it.” Chapman let it all sink in for a moment. Nerve gas, East Berlin, the Wall: good God. Talbot waited for the other shoe to drop as a clock ticked quietly in the background.“Kill?

You want me to kill this man sir?”“That’s affirmative Sergeant.”“I’m not killing anyone in cold blood. I don’t care who he is or what he’s up to.”“Well, then set him up, so he’s forced to defend himself, if that will satisfy your conscience. I want this case closed, you understand?

I want to read Starczak’s obituary in the Neues Deutschland on Wednesday.”Talbot found a dilapidated pension in a bleak section of East Berlin, about a half mile from the university. It was the kind of place that catered to hookers, drunks and other assorted souls. Talbot was in the assorted soul’s category. It was an anonymous type of place, on a grey anonymous street- the type of place that didn’t ask for anything but cash.About fifty yards away, the rear wall turned sharply toward the east and made a small half circle. There was an entrance that the Grepos used to drive on to the service road in the middle of the border zone.

Talbot took a deep breath and entered the border zone. A Grepo on duty was hunched over in the rain, trying to stay dry and warm. He barely gave Talbot a moment’s look. Talbot looked to his right and the imposing figure of an 18th Century church that had the misfortune of being in the middle of East and West border politics. The church was abandoned, but it appeared the Grepos used it for some type of headquarters.Jock Lewis served as a military intelligence officer in Europe during the Cold War...
